Sox & Tigers Continue Recent Trends

If you’re the Detroit Tigers, this isn’t the way you envisioned the start of your season. As a matter of fact, this isn’t what the “experts” forecasted in the crystal ball either. They, not the White Sox, were supposed to be atop the Central, after all, they made the big moves in the off-season and signed superstars to big contracts. With all apologizes to the Tigers, the White Sox are the ones who are playing list pre-season favorites. With the 11-0 beating off Detroit on Sunday afternoon, the Sox are in first place in the Central and leading the A.L. Thus far the Sox have five wins against the Tigers and have lost but one.

In their latest win, Chicago’s offensive stars shined and put-up numbers that have reflected their early firepower. Joe Crede had his second grand slam in a week and is now leading the A.L. in RBI’s. Crede seems to be fully repaired after an injury that lingered last season. This is a great timing for Crede who was battling for his starting third base spot with Josh Fields (Crede’s replacement when he was down with injury) during a majority of spring training.

Before Crede hit his granny in the fifth inning, Paul Konerko hit one as well just two innings prior. Konerko started the Sox scoring in the first inning with an RBI single. His five RBI’s is the most for a White Sox player thus far in the season.

The last time two White Sox teammates had grand slams in the same game was in May of 1996 when Darren Lewis and another Sox third baseman, Robin Ventura, each hit one out. Ironically, that game was also versus Detroit.

While the offense got a majority of the talk after the game, lost in the mix was the outstanding pitching performance by Javier Vazquez. Vazquez pitched seven strong innings and only allowed five total hits (four singles and a double). He didn’t put himself in harm’s way either as he didn’t allow a base on balls and managed to strike-out nine Tiger batters.

This lop-sided Sox victory allowed Ozzie Guillen to rest his relief catalyst, Bobby Jenks. Nick Masset worked an inning and gave-up a single and a walk but no runs. This is a good sign since in his last outing the Twins roughed-up Masset with five runs on six hits and three walks in less than four innings of work. In a season that spans several months, it shows that the veteran can bounce back and not shake-up the previous game.

With the latest series versus Detroit over with, the Sox welcome the Oakland A’s to U.S. Cellular for a brief two game set starting on Monday night. The Sox will have a familiar horse on the mound for them in Mark Buehrle. Buehrle was ripped in his last outing and looks to rebounds to assert his dominance on the hill for the South-siders.
