Griffey’s Heading to Chicago

Ken Griffe jr - Welcome to the Chicago White SoxYou know it's trading season when you go to bed only to wake up and realize your team has now added a new player and traded off two. Ken Griffey Jr. approved a trade Thursday from the Cincinnati Reds to the White Sox.

On Wednesday night Griffey was approached by the Reds management asking if he would agree to a waive of his contractual rights to become a Sox player. Since Griffey has over 10 years of MLB experience and 5 years with the Reds, known as the 10-and-5 rights, he had the ability to veto the trade. He didn’t and now Griffey has a chance to do something he has never been able to do in his 20 years of baseball, possibly make it to a World Series.

Griffey is hitting .245 with 15 homeruns and 53 RBI’s for the Reds this season. In June, he joined the likes of Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa as the 6th player in history to hit 600 home runs.

Not confirmed yet is that the Reds will receive pitcher Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar in return for Griffey.

Since the Sox seem set in the outfield with Carlos Quentin, our MVP on the team, in left field and Jermaine Dye who is batting a .311 average in right field the only move to make would be to replace Swisher in center. Nick Swisher, who proved himself valuable on first during Konerko’s time on the DL with an oblique injury, could be moving back to give Paulie, who’s struggling at the bat with a .214 average, some much needed time off.

Kenny Williams finally got this wish which was to have Griffey wearing a Sox jersey. In 2005 Williams tried to recruit Griffey but the trade fell through due to money issues. Let’s hope this is the push we need to get that World Series title back.
