GENEVA – Despite seven solid innings, starter Jamie Richmond (5-6) took the loss as a costly error accounted for all of the opposition’s runs in the Kane County Cougars 3-2 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium. The loss resulted in the Cougars first series sweep of the season as they limp into the All-Star break. Richmond was rolling into the seventh, allowing just four hits and two walks, but a two out error by shortstop Michael Richard allowed the first run to score. The next batter, left fielder Tyler Johnson, cranked a two-run home run to left center to put the Kernels up 3-0. The Cougars offense struggled early, but put up a run in the seventh after Greg Dowling walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on two consecutive balks by Kernels relief pitcher Trevor Bell. Larry Cobb lined the next pitch into left field for an RBI single. The Cougars tallied another run in the eighth off Michael Davitt when Richard drove in Corey Brown with a single to right.
