Double Header, Double Fun
Written by Jon P. Dwyer    Saturday, 24 May 2008 04:23    PDF Print E-mail

It’s a doubleheader today between the Kane Cougars and the Quad Cities River Bandits. They are two of the top teams in the league and are separated by only a few games. That didn’t chance as the teams split the doubleheader, with the Cougars sloppy winners of the first game and the River Bandits dominating game two.

What could be better than a summer doubleheader? Does it really matter that it was sixty degrees and overcast? It’s the first real weekend of the summer and you can catch a doubleheader and a spectacular fireworks display for eight bucks.

Game one was a messy start with an amazing end. The Cougars didn’t do a spectacular job of getting out the word of the doubleheader to the public, and apparently only told their players five minutes before the first pitch, because there were four errors committed. It’s probably a good thing most of the fans only caught the end of the game, because the beginning was sloppy.

Errors or not, the Cougars pulled out a 4-3 win with some heroics in the final inning as Shane Keough drove in the winning run with two outs.

The Cougars started game two strong, as Shane Keough and Greg Dowling both reached and scored in the first inning. Scott Deal even had a no-hitter going after half the game had passed, but he was outshined by his counterpart, Brian Broderick. Broderick calmed down after a rough start to throw four scoreless before being pulled in the 6th.

Kane County once again was bitten by the error bug. They made three costly errors which dug a four run hole that, considering double headers in A-ball are 7 innings a piece, was too deep to overcome. The Cougars lost game two 6-2.

All things considered, it was a rough day for the guys from Kane County. Shane Keough was a bright spot, with four hits all day, but the team made too many errors and the Cougars had to split the day. Almost 6000 fans walked away entertained, however, as the Cougars ended the night with an impressive fireworks display.
