What’s Your Fantasy . . . Football! Week 2
Written by Bill Bizeau / CS Staff Writer    Friday, 12 September 2008 20:00    PDF Print E-mail

Another week of the NFL is upon us, and that means another week of Fantasy Football. Now, if you missed last week’s picks, you missed out on a lot. Before I tell you which guys to start and sit this week, let’s check out how they did last week.

Quarterbacks

• Start: Brett Favre—251 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
• Start: Kurt Warner—197 yards, 1 TD
• Sit: Matt Hassleback—190 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Running Backs

• Start: Frank Gore—96 rushing yards, 1 TD, 4 rec for 55 yards
• Start: Ricky Williams—24 rushing yards, 15 receiving yards
• Sit: Chris Perry—37 rushing yards, 1 fumble

Wide Receivers

• Start: Jerricho Cotchery—3 catches, 80 yards, 1 TD
• Start: Hines Ward—6 catches, 76 yards, 2 TDs
• Sit: Lee Evans—4 catches, 102 yards

Tight Ends

• Start: Heath Miller—3 catches, 26 yards
• Sit: Todd Heap—1 catch, 5 yards, 1 fumble

Those were last week’s picks, and I would have to say I gave you some winners. Brett Favre came out and gave a nice showing, along with his new sidekick Jerricho Cotchery. As for the running game, I apologize for jumping on the Ricky Williams bandwagon; he let me down after a great preseason showing! If you’re looking for fantasy answers, you have come to the right place, so let’s get to work on week two.

Quarterbacks

Start ‘Em

• Eli Manning: Did you see the connection he and Plaxico Burress had in week one? Look for that hookup again, but this time count in some touchdowns. I like Eli a lot this week against St. Louis. Three passing touchdowns is not out of the question for this guy. McNabb torched the Ram’s secondary for three touchdowns last week, and I think the trend will continue. Big day for the little Manning Brother!

• Aaron Rodgers: All right, he got the first game jitters out of the way. He showed positives left and right against a good Minnesota defense. Green Bay has owned Detroit lately, winning five straight and 13 of the last 15 against the Lions. The Packers also put up 71 total points in the two meetings with the Lions last year. Looks like even without Favre, they will have the Lion’s number. I predict 275 yards and 2 touchdown passes.

Sit ‘Em

• Carson Palmer: Maybe I have given up on this guy, or maybe it’s just that this team is in shambles! They face a tough Titan defense, which played very well last week against Jacksonville. Until this team actually puts up big numbers I’ve put Carson on the back burner. He may find the end zone this week, but I’m not willing to risk it and neither should you! Let him sit again if you have a better option; if not, then take a roll of the dice, but don’t be mad when it goes wrong!

Running Backs

Start ‘Em

• Larry Johnson: Normally I would stay away from anyone coming out of Kansas City. So, what’s the difference this week? Oakland in town. What did we find out about the Raiders on Monday? Two words . . . THEY STINK! This may be one of Larry’s biggest games of the season. I think he will get 120 yards rushing and find the end zone twice this weekend. Oakland gave up more than 140 yards on the ground last week to the Denver Broncos and can expect to give up that much this week to Johnson. A little side note: If you have Jamaal Charles and you’re stretching for a player, he might put up some okay numbers for you.

• Adrian Peterson: This is a for sure pick week-in and week-out, but this week he is extra-special, which is why he makes my list. We saw what Bears’ rookie running back Matt Forte did to Indianapolis’ defensive line and linebackers. What’s to say that Peterson can’t do that plus more? The Colts have been suspect to giving up the run for quite some time now. I think the Vikings will find some sort of a passing game and it will open the door for AP. Look for his first big run of the season as well, which will put him over the 125-yard mark, and a trip to the end zone.

Sit ‘Em

• Julius Jones: I was very high on this pickup when I saw it earlier this year. Now, however, Seattle is in trouble. They lost Nate Burleson this weekend and have nobody left to go to. They are considering signing Keenan McCardell and Peerless Price—that’s how desperate they have become in the Northwest! The 49ers will be ready for the run-heavy offense of the Seattle Seahawks this week, and that will cause nothing but problems for Jones.

Wide Receivers

Start ‘Em

•Calvin Johnson: I think Detriot got a rude awakening last week with the Falcons and now know that running the ball is not their strength. They actually made it a game by doing what they do best, and that is throwing the ball. Calvin Johnson will get his turn to find the end zone this week. Play him without any doubts . . . this pick is a winner this week.

• Anquan Boldin: Regardless of his situation out there and him wanting a trade, he still plays his heart out. Last week, he caught eight balls in the second half alone. Going against an up-and-down defense with Miami? Eighty yards again and a touchdown is what I see in my crystal ball.

Sit’Em

• Chris Chambers: He may have shown up last week against Carolina at the end, but you can bet Champ Bailey and the Broncos’ secondary will have him locked down. I predict a Quiet day from Chambers this Sunday. If he has more then four catches, I’d be surprised.

Tight Ends

Start ‘Em

• Jeremy Shockey: He will have a big weekend coming out of him this week. With the injury to Marques Colston, Brees is going to be looking for new weapons to step it up. This is where Shockey comes in and makes it known he is ready to play for New Orleans. Six catches, 80 yards, and a touchdown this week.

Sit ‘Em

• Donald Lee: He looked to be one of Aaron Rodgers’ targets last week, but this week I think Rodgers will open up the field more for the long ball—which will take away from the short pass. Green Bay also might grab a big lead, which will cause them to use the ground game to eat the clock. More than 40 yards receiving would be a stretch.

Now we get to our defenses. If you’re looking to find the defense that will have the turnovers this week, I have the answer. I’m going with two defenses who normally wouldn’t put up the numbers, but count on the 49ers and the Cardinals to have big weeks.
