Chicago Sporting counts down the top 10 running backs in the NFL. Some are common faces, some are not, but ready or not, here they come.
1. LaDainian Tomlinson
Not a great week for LT against a stout Carolina Panthers defense, but 97 yards is great for anyone else. Expect LT to get into pay dirt at Denver against the Broncos.
2. Adrian Peterson
Solid outing against a tough Green Bay defense; should get easier with the Indianapolis Colts next.
3. Brian Westbrook
Very Westbrook-like game: rushed for one TD, caught another. He’s got Dallas this week; his receiving stats will go up against the Cowboys, but his rush stats may take a hit.
4. Joseph Addai
Injured early, and faced a tough Chicago Bears’ defense. But it’s not going to get any easier this week with Minnesota’s rush defense.
5. Frank Gore
Good game for Gore (96 rushing yards, 55 receiving yards, 1 TD) after what was a down year for him in ’07. He should have a good week against the Seattle Seahawks too.
6. Marion Barber
A great game for Barber, who netted 101 yards and 2 TDs. Oh yeah, did I mention that he went out early with a rib injury?
7. Willie Parker
Willie Parker got right back to form with a 3-TD performance against the Houston Texans, which is one more than he had all last year. Expect much of the same this week against Cleveland.
8. Michael Turner
What a breakout game for the former backup to LT (220 yards and 2 TDs), but it was against the lowly Detroit Lions. Let’s see how he fares this week against the much better Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
9. Marshawn Lynch
Solid week against Seattle, but it’s going to get a whole heck of a lot harder against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week.
10. Matt Forte
A great debut for the rookie out of Tulane (123 yards on 23 carries and a score). This week will be interesting against the bigger and better Carolina defense.
