In preparation for the season opener on April 11, against the Iowa Crush on the road, the Force held the annual intra-squad scrimmage and photo media day on Sunday April 6 at Holmgren Athletic Complex, on the campus of North Park University. Despite chilly conditions that saw Mother Nature go from sunshine to hail, rain and snow, 100 or so loyal fans braved the conditions and cheered on the team. The scrimmage featured a game like atmosphere complete with officials, game clock, and field announcements. “Today is the last time the coaching staff gets the chance to assess players and positions in a controlled environment,” said Head Coach John Konecki.
The game saw local journalist David Murray suiting up and playing quarterback for a couple of series. Murray’s appearance culminates six months of training along side the women of the Force.” It was everything that I thought it would be and more,” explained Murray who hopes to have his story published by ESPN, and Sports Illustrated. “The ladies didn’t take easy on me. I ended up on my butt a couple of times. It was a great experience.” Rookie wide receiver Martha Dantuma certainly opened the eyes of the coaching staff and fans with several impressive catches and should be a nice addition to the offense. “Today was the best that I’ve seen Martha play by far,” said Konecki. “There are players that turn it on when they step between the white lines. Martha certainly did that today. She understands the offense and at 6’2 she can run and catch. We are excited about her potential,” added Konecki. Defensively, a lot of positions are still undecided by the retirement of several key players. “We do have many new players on defense and are in a continual improvement mode right now,” said Defensive Coordinator Jerry Verde. “We are doing a lot of teaching hoping that repetition will help the process.
