Cubs Thriller in Milwaukee
Written by Zecharia Gilbert / CS Sports Columnist    Sunday, 12 April 2009 09:16    PDF Print E-mail
Milwaukee, WI - The Chicago Cubs and Carlos Zambrano came out of the gates on Saturday night, staggering.  From the beginning of the game, the Cub fans at Miller Park, could tell that Zambrano did not have his mojo as he gave up 3 runs over 6 innings. It looked as though the Brewers had the game wrapped up going into the 9th inning as the Cubs were down 5-4.

Despite giving up 3 runs, Zambrano did keep the Cubs in the game.  "I felt good today," Zambrano said. "Early on, I was behind in the count, and I think my delivery was too rushed to the plate. That's what happens when you try to be too perfect. I knew how to come back and battle out there and give my team a chance to win the ballgame."

In the 7th inning things got hairy for the Cubs with a tied game (3-3) Angel Guzman came in to pitch for the Cubs, but walked Corey Hart and Ryan Braun. Angel Guzman was quickly replaced by Neal Cotts to face Prince Fielder, who had homered off starter Carlos Zambrano in the third. But the lefty walked Fielder to load the bases. That's not what Piniella wanted, and he sent pitching coach Larry Rothschild out to get Cotts. J.J. Hardy greeted Cotts' replacement, Aaron Heilman, with a single to center, driving in two.

By this time in the game there had been plenty of skirmishes in the stands as Brewer and Cubs fans called each other obscenities and on dozens of occasions police were called to escort fired-up drunk fans out of Miller Park.  With the Brewers now up 5-3, Cubs fans settled down, but that wouldn't last long as Aramis Ramirez stepped into bat in the 8th inning and belted a solo shot to left field for his 175th home run as a Cubbie and moving him into 10th all-time on the Cubs all time home run list.

Going into the 9th innings the Cubs were still down 5-4, but that would change quickly as Alfonso Soriano belted a two-run homer with one out to give the Cubs a 6-5 lead. The Cubs fans came alive and the Cubbie faithfuls could be heard singing, "Go-Cubs-Go!"

Carlos Marmol came into pitch for the Cubs and closed out a come-from-behind victory over the Brewers and even the series at one win apiece.
