Irene Johnson Earns ESPN Honors
Written by Chicago Sporting    Thursday, 08 November 2007 12:22    PDF Print E-mail

Johnson is the second Huskie in the past two years to earn such an
honor

DeKalb, Ill.  Northern Illinois volleyball junior Irene Johnson
(Schaumburg, Ill. / Schaumburg) received her second honor of the season
today as she was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V
Second Team by the members of the District V College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

"It's great", said Huskie head coach Ray Gooden.  "One of the
biggest pitches for Dr. Phillips is for our players to not only excel on
the court, but in the classroom as well.  This award is a true example
of that."

In her third year at NIU, Johnson has continued to excel and progress
both athletically and academically.  As a family, consumer and nutrition
services major with a minor in Spanish, Johnson has held a cumulative
grade-point average of 3.85 through four semesters.

Johnson was also selected as the Mid-American Conference Player of the
Week for the week of October 1 earlier this season when she totaled 30
kills, 24 digs and five blocks to help the Huskies win a pair of
matches over Toledo and Ball State.  Johnson currently ranks seventh in the
MAC with a career-best average of 3.66 kills per game and has set
career-highs in total kills (20 vs. Kent State, 10/19) and digs (27 vs.
Eastern Michigan, 9/29) in a match.

"We're excited about the progress that Irene has made on the
volleyball court," said Gooden.  "We"re also truly impressed with her
ability to maintain a high academic standard as well as be successful on
the court.  That"s a testament to her parents and her dedication."

Johnson joins former Huskie Marie Zidek as the only NIU volleyball
players to earn such an honor.  Zidek was an ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District Third Team honoree in 2005 as a senior.

"We're glad to have two players receive this honor over the past
couple years," Gooden said.  "Kirstine (Jensen) has done a great job
recruiting both talented volleyball players and great student-athletes.
She should be applauded for her work as a recruiting coordinator."

The Huskies are in action this weekend at Victor E. Court as they host
Ball State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Toledo on Saturday at 7 p.m.
