One thing that we have learned this summer is that deals can emerge from nowhere&... Chicago Bulls 'Unlikely' To Sign Tracy McGrady » What a shocker. Tracy McGrady did not make the Chicago Bulls feel like he was ready to accept a secondary position with the team. Chicago Bulls in Need of a Healthy Tracy McGrady » It seems like most sportswriters are opposed to the idea of the Bulls bringing in the 13-year veteran Tracy McGrady. Jerry Angelo Pulls the Trigger on Plaxico?
Written by Zecharia Gilbert / CS Sports Columnist    Monday, 18 May 2009 07:32    PDF Print E-mail
The Chicago Bears have long been a team without a franchise quarterback or wide receiver and now that we have our quarterback, isn't it time we get a few great receivers?  The free agent wire is not littered with WR's, but could provide a lift.  So, where should the Chicago Bears eyes' be roaming?  There are a few WR's that are ripe and ready to step into the Bears locker room and onto the playing field.  Is Jerry Angelo pulling the trigger this week?

Here's a break down of the wide receivers left on the market that the Bears are looking at.

Robinson, Koren WR UFA 6-1 205 7th Season SEA TBD
Koren Robinson may be a good gamble.  In 2002 Robinson hauled in 78 receptions for 1,240 yards.  Robinson hasn't seen the ball enough since his break out 2002 season, but with Jay Cutler under center, he could be a bargain for the Bears.  The concern with Koren Robinson is his knees.  His left knee was injured last year and had to sit out practices, which is nothing new when it comes to the Bears.

Jones, Matt WR Released 6-6 218 4th Season JAC TBD
Matt Jones had his best season in 2008  with 65 receptions for 761 yards and going into his 5th season, he has plenty of years left to play.  At 6'6" and 218 lbs, he'd be a great target for Cutler to throw to.  He will be another bargain, but not without some baggage.  Matt Jones is a former first-round pick of the Jaguars and was released in the wake of his one-week jail sentence for a violation of his parole in connection with a drug-related arrest in Arkansas. So, possibly the Bears could pick up Jones and Plaxico and they could car pool to their court cases?

Harrison, Marvin WR Released 6-0 185 13th Season IND TBD
Marvin Harrison has probably seen his best years, however, he'd be a great team leader.  He's humble and not out spoken and can give his knowledge to the young WR corp.  With Jay Cutler and a healthy Marvin Harrison, he'd be sure to give the Bears at least 70 receptions.  He may be too expensive, but if he's willing to play for a veteran minimum, he could be a great gamble.

Plaxico Burris WR Released 6-5 232 10th Season NY TBD
Plaxico, Plaxico, Plaxico.  Everyone does something in their lives to "shoot themselves in the foot", but Plaxico had to shoot himself in the leg.  Would the Chicago Bears love to have a receiver with his abilities, of course.  Would we like the distractions, of course not.  Even if Plaxico escapes prison time and the NFL allows Plaxico to play in 2009, is he really worth it?  I don't think so.  This is a great media story, but let's get real.

The Bears are looking at the big picture right now.  If I were in Jerry Angelo's shoes, I would have my eyes fixed on Koren Robinson.  He's not going to shoot himself in the leg, get busted for drugs, or have to retire in the next two years.  Without the drug charges, Matt Jones would be at the top of my list.

Here's where I think they rank:
1.  Koren Robinson
2.  Marvin Harrison
3.  Matt Jones
4.  Plaxico Burris

The Chicago Bears need to look at longevity and experience and that's why Koren Robinson would be a great gamble for the Chicago Bears.  He's the only free agent with big numbers and youth, without an arrest record.  I would love to see Marvin Harrison in a Chicago Bear uniform, but they need stability at the WR position.  Pull the trigger Jerry Angelo, pull the trigger!
