The Chicago Bears season is now officially over after their 24-31 loss to the Houston Texans. It seems like only yesterday the Chicago Bears headed to training camp and the biggest story heading in was, "which quarterback would Lovie shovel into the impending offensive disfunction?" The story coming out of the season is one of defensive woes and disappointment. Who could have imagined the "disappointing" season. But, was it really a disappointment? So many had only predicted a 7-9 season for the Chicago Bears. The offensive line was getting old, we had no real experience at running back, and the quarterback situation was again a disfunctional conversation. When we look at what really happened, who could have guessed we'd be shaking our heads at the defense? When looking over the stats from this year, there are two things that really stand out this year versus last year.
The key to this years decline in sacks lays in the defensive line. The Bears simply could not get to the quarterback despite having a great run stopping defense. The Bears did not create the fumbles that would ultimately lead to turnovers. What do the Bears need heading into 2009? The Bears will need to draft and trade for defensive seconday. Once again, Mike Jones was not able to finish up a season, which may have cost the Chicago Bears a trip to the post season as they could not stop the Houston Texan's WR, Andre Johnson. Andre Johnson was able to catch just about everything thrown at him, catching 10 passes for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns. Next the Bears will need to shore up their defensive line. With the Bears' sack counts down, it really put the pressure on the Bears' defensive backs to come up big. That did not happen, and thus the Bears could not stop the passing game. So, Chicago and the Bears now move on to their lazy days and hibernation. With the disappointments on defense and the postseason hope now erased, the best we can hope for now is again, next year.
